~ Genesis iii, 3.
Do not suppose that we may eat
Each fruit that may grow as a treat
From trees that stand in middle of
Ripe gardens filled with human love.
Undo the thought, for God's command
Condemns eating that sweet fruit grand
That stands in the midst of the land
Under the cloud of paradise.
Verily, we must not touch vice.
Eat of it and we both shall die.
Remind me on this I rely.
Play if you will in paradise and find
Raw fruit insipid to the dumb and blind
And little more among the earthly store.
Each disappointed woman at the door
Comes out to me the husband of her soil.
Each disappointed man, despite his toil,
Pretends to love and loses all the more.

Beyond the welcome singing of the wind,
I find the garden still where none have sinned,
Subdued and silent in the secret wood,
Donating little but sweetmeats and good.
Escape, my soul, from every whisper here!
Unleash the words in storm that must appear
Secreted in the depth of heart and brain.
No serpent at the scruff of neck in pain
Emerges to release from will and chain.
Connexion with the soil will be its claim
On some vast market left and right desert.
My last desires become desires inert.
Each day I, like my blind friend who at last
Demanded peace from all before the blast,
Even a loving wife who cared for him,
Rewriting his love poems to image dim,
Enraged or calm, I write and write my lines
Much smothered with my foreign words' designs.
Uusi puu ja ura uusi,
Suloisesti katsovi kuusi,
Edestakaisin katsovi,
Tarjosi tarmokkahasti,
Niittyjen neulaset niitti,
Edestakaisin tarjosi,
Tuulen varjota tempaisi,
Aukasi käpyjen aivot,
Nittyjen neulasten nurkat.
From every tree the garden yields I eat.
On sunny days my cousin, for a treat,
Ran through the woods with me to find the vine,
The vine where grew the wildest grapes and fine.
Enough of tasting that enlightened store,
My cousin climbed up in the trees the more,
Out swinging on the red-brown length of bough.
Reminded of the taste and rush, I now
Insist on swinging on from dream to dream
Among the wild grapes of the things that seem,
Made in the image of what gods remain
Under the oaks where the grape vines regain
Ripe innocents from generations' reign.
1 You birds, sing! It has not consoled you, the tree in the garden growing, fruit the serpent has given you.
